Spencer Mountain and what is called The Pig Farm offer miles of intermediate to advanced single track mountain bike riding. 20 miles south of Whitefish is Flathead Lake, the largest freshwater body of water west of the Mississippi River which is another popular haven for water recreation. Several other gorgeous clean lakes dot the Flathead Valley as well. Southeast of Whitefish by about 15 miles is the Jewel Basin Hiking Area with 15,000 acres designated for hiking use only that encompasses 20 lakes and sweeping vistas of the entire Flathead Valley and Flathead Lake. Surrounding the Flathead Valley is National Forest land which makes it easy to find un-tamed lands just beyond the community boundaries.
Whitefish rests at the base of Big Mountain, home to the Whitefish Mountain Resort. The mountain is bustling with summer activities from top to bottom. Whitefish Mountain Resort utilizes the chairlifts for mountain bike access to some of the many single track trails that criss-cross over the face of Big Mountain. Many mountain biking enthusiasts prefer to bike up the mountain as well as down. The most extreme Whitefish Mountain Resort activity, aside from the downhill mountain biking, is the series of zip lines. The zip line tour goes as fast as 60 mph and as high as 300 feet overhead which creates major adrenaline. There is a walk in the treetops, ropes and boardwalk course tour which is a great confidence builder as well as a unique educational nature walk. The alpine slide, which is a wheeled lounge, is great for the whole family. Hikers and sight-seers often take the chairlift up for scenic enjoyment and walk down, enjoying the beargrass and wildflowers as they descend. 25 miles east of Whitefish is the amazing and gorgeous Glacier National Park. 700 miles of trails, soaring peaks, alpine lakes; Glacier Park is as scenic as they come. Park visitors love to hike, take bus tours, flight tours, fly fish, horseback ride and most of all whitewater raft. The southern and western boundaries of Glacier National Park are two forks, the North and Middle Forks, of the Flathead River. The rivers and streams that flow from the high peaks of Glacier National Park are undammed and free-flowing with a blue-green hue created by the melted glacial silt that remains suspended in the water. With the exciting town of Whitefish so near, many park visitors choose to stay in Whitefish to enjoy the happening nightlife after a peaceful day on the trails.
