More to Know About Acadia

ACADIA NATIONAL PARK is located on Mount Desert Island, Maine. It is the only national park in any of the New England states. Acadia was first created as Lafayette National Park in 1916, the name was changed to Acadia National Park in 1929. Acadia National Park preserves 40,000 acres of Atlantic coast shoreline, mixed hardwood, and spruce/fir forest, mountains, and lakes, as well as several offshore islands.

The Wabanaki were the inhabitants of Mount Desert Island at the time the first Europeans made contact in the 1500s. The history of the Wabanaki can be found at Acadia's Abbe Museum. The museum is located just off the Park Loop Road near Sieur de Monts Spring, and the expanded Abbe Museum is located on Mt. Desert Street in Bar Harbor. Visiting the museum is just one of the popular activities at Acadia National Park.

A Maine politician once remarked that "the portable sawmill created ACADIA National Park." Indeed, summer residents concerned with the plundering of the wooded land by large lumber companies led them to create a public land trust in 1901 to protect the land from uncontrolled development. Over the next few years, several people contributed private land and other resources towards the creation of Acadia National Park, in order to protect this beautiful land for future generations.
